Oct. 25 Ceremony To Name New Municipal Building for Legendary Fort Worth Educator
Mayor Mike Moncrief and Mayor Pro Tem Kathleen Hicks will lead the festivities during an Oct. 25 Naming Ceremony for a new municipal building going up as part of the Evans and Rosedale Business and Cultural District Revitalization Project.
The ceremony naming the building the Hazel Harvey Peace Center for Neighborhoods will begin at 10 a.m. at 818 Missouri Ave. The building's namesake was a highly respected Fort Worth educator and community leader.
The center will house the city's Code Compliance and Community Relations departments as well as offices for Police Department staff and Community Prosecutors. Completion is scheduled for late 2009.
In Fort Worth, Mrs. Peace's name is synonymous with commitment to service and passion for education. She earned degrees at Howard University and Columbia University, returned to Fort Worth and taught at I.M. Terrell High School for decades.
Mrs. Peace also served as a counselor, dean of girls and vice principal. After retirement from the public schools, she served at various Texas colleges.
She was the first African-American woman to have a professorship at a four-year state-funded Texas institution named for her: the University of North Texas' Hazel Harvey Peace Professorship in Children's Library Services.

Zoo Run Run

Dear Zoo Neighbor,

Thank you for your continued support of the Fort Worth Zoo!

The Zoo will host its 11th annual Zoo Run Run on Saturday, April 19, 2008. Proceeds from this year’s Zoo Run Run will benefit the Zoo’s ongoing conservation programs, including all 25 of the Zoo’s frog species in honor of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Year of the Frog.

Zoo Run Run will be held on the soccer fields located next to the Zoo’s main entrance. All event activities are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. with a chip-timed 10K and 5K run. The course will take participants on a “wild” journey through your neighborhood.

You can expect to see runners and walkers in your neighborhood from approximately 7 to 9:30 a.m. There will be aid stations placed along Winton Terrace, Park Hill and Hartwood. There will also be several race guides and Zoo staffers along the course wearing official Zoo Run Run T-shirts to direct runners.

Boo Bash Entertainment Update

We are adding a new attraction this year to the Boyd Boo Bash. We will have live entertainment from Roy Harkey. So come out and enjoy some good food, drink, fellowship and entertainment from Roy Harkey. We look forward to see you at the festival.

A little something about Roy:
Roy started making and writing music in his youth. He used local bands and solo performances to work his way through his Alma Mater, Oklahoma University. He played bass for Ike and Tina Turner (before their split-up) and has sung and played with Bonnie Raitt and a few other nationally known artist since the early 2000's. During his music career he has played with many other small combos, large bands, and a big city symphony (on the string bass).
Roy co-wrote and played on a song "Groovy Grubworm" with a former band mate (Harlow Wilcox) that went to #1 on the country charts in the late 70's, and was nominated for a Grammy that same year.
He now does 'solo work' (Singing, Guitar, foot controlled Porch Bass and 'miked' Tambourine), that creates a very 'full' sound for a solo entertainer.
Roy performed a One-Man-Show in Las Vegas during the late 90's. He has also played hotel lounges, night clubs, bars, big and small parties, and various functions at large and small conventions around the country.
He has a very large musical repertoire, and covers most musical styles. He enjoys playing Easy Listening Music, Ballads, Folk, Soft Rock, Rockabilly, Blues, Old & New Country, Folk/Rock, DooWops, and Golden Oldies; and can 'mix' enough different types of music during his sets to please everyone in the crowd.
Roy also plays with a very lively Texas Show Band, "RetroActive".

Trinity Trees Are Threatened. Help Save Them.

The beautiful, eight-acre wooded parcel of land along the Trinity River Hike and Bike Trail near Rogers Road, which most people thought was a park, is now owned by Chesapeake Energy. Plans are being finalized to destroy 2.5 acres of the trees to use the area for a gas-drilling site.

TCU signs natural gas exploration lease

FORT WORTH, Texas (August 7, 2007) -TCU today announced that it signed alease with Four Sevens Resources Company, Ltd., to drill for natural gas north of the football stadium in remote campus parking. The decision tosign the lease follows meetings with neighborhood leaders, faculty, staff and students to address their questions regarding safety, noise and traffic related to drilling. Four Sevens was appointed the university's natural gas operator by the Executive Committee of TCU'sBoard of Trustees last spring after a review of proposals submitted tothe university as part of a request-for-proposal process.

"We invested major time and effort to negotiate a lease that satisfies our concerns and addresses neighbors' concerns to the best of our ability," said Mr. Brian Gutierrez, TCU vice chancellor for finance andadministration. "As a result, we anticipate an efficient process from start to finish."

The drilling site will be monitored, appropriately secured with fencing and inspected throughout the drilling procedure by state and local officials. Truck traffic will be routed to streets away from dense neighborhood areas to minimize traffic congestion and city noise ordinances will be followed. Parking will be relocated to other university parking lots.

Drilling will occur between the months of January through July in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Drilling will not occur during football season. Once drilling is complete, the university will landscape the site with trees and shrubbery and secure the area with attractive wrought iron fencing.

Any funds secured through drilling will be placed in the university's endowment, a decision made by the TCU Board of Trustees last spring."I am pleased we have been able to review the safety and traffic concerns of those most impacted by this gas exploration -- neighbors, faculty, staff and students," said TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini,Jr. "The resources acquired through gas exploration will better enableTCU to offer an excellent university experience," said Boschini. "This includes providing a campus where students live and learn in a diverse, technologically advanced environment in classrooms with a small student-to-faculty ratio. It also means more opportunities fors cholarships."

TCU's decision to drill follows a long line of other Metroplex organizations pursuing natural gas exploration opportunities. These organizations include the City of Fort Worth, Tarrant County CommunityCollege, the Fort Worth Independent School District, Colonial Country Club, and the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

These butterflies have been observed and photographed in our backyard garden on Shirley in Fort Worth over June and early July 2007. We have observed and identified 22 species so far. But there are still many other butterfly species that have been reported in Tarrant Country for us to watch for. We used our Minolta G-500 digital camera with resolution set to 2048 x 1536. We have identified the butterflies from the excellent website Butterflies and Moths of North America http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/ hosted and maintained by the Big Sky Institute at Montana State University and the NBII Mountain Prairie Information Node. You can click on most of the butterflies to get more information about them from this website. The flowers are mostly Purple Cone Flowers, Lady Bird Cosmos and Phlox.

Wow, summer is almost over. Well, can we really call it summer when we haven't hit 100 degrees yet. Soon we will be hearing the cracking of football pads and will know TCU Football is amoung us and Fall is around the corner. This is a great time to live in University West.

While looking at the calender it looks like October 27th will be a good day to hold the annual BoydBooBash. Mark your calenders and plan to attend. As always we will be looking for people to help or if you would like to make a donation to help support the event it would be greatly appreciated. You can make checks payable to UWNA please indicate that it is to support this event and submit them to Mike Henry.

Super Bowl XLV, North Texas -- 2011

Super Bowl XLV will be played in the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium in Arlington, Texas that is set to open in 2009. The site of the 2011 Super Bowl was decided at the owners' meetings in Nashville on May 22, 2007.

Rumor has it that the American Football Conference (AFC) Champions Teams lodging and practice sessions will be held at Texas Christian University (TCU). What an exciting time to live in University West.

Mosquito Season is Upon Us

The Fort Worth area received an unusual amount of rain this spring and with the rain comes the mosquitoes. I make an organic yard spray out of natural herbs and oil that keeps mosquitoes at bay. There are organic sprays that cost about $150/gallon of concentrated ingredients. If interested in my formula let me know. Cost is about $20 (will cover 16,000 sq') and time to make will take about 1/2 hour. Let's make this neighborhood a mosquito free area.

West Nile Virus is the most overblown health threat since the “killer bees.” Yes, people have gotten sick and a few have even died from WNV, but people need to get a grip and try to put things into perspective. One person has died this year from WNV. Thousands of people have died from asthma and other respiratory diseases.
The city of Fort Worth has impressed me. They have done the right thing. They have realized that spraying does more harm than good and has spent their effort educating homeowners. The city of Dallas and other metropolitan areas across the country have been foolish. These cities have listened to the chemical pushers under the misconception that spraying toxic chemicals is helpful in controlling the mosquitoes.

Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV)

NEVs come in two speeds: golf cars are limited to speeds under 20 mph while low-speed vehicles (as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are capable of up to 25 mph. Low-speed vehicles must have seatbelts, windshields, turn signals, headlights, brake lights and other safety equipment that golf cars don't require. NEVs are designed to be used in residential areas with low density traffic and low speed zones. With a top speed of 25 mph, low-speed vehicles can be used on streets with a posted 35 mph speed limit or less. Some local jurisdictions (e.g. Palm Springs) also allow golf cars on public streets. When driven on public streets, a driver's license is required.

UWNA Hosts Garden Party

University West Neighborhood Association is proud to present its first annual Progressive Garden Party on Saturday April 28. This party is designed to showcase neighborhood gardens, backyards and to provide an opportunity to enjoy a lovely spring evening with friends, family and neighbors.

Each garden represents a different gardening style and philosophy. Gardens range from cascading waterfalls to lazy rivers to simple and relaxed landscaping. The garden party is a great way to gather ideas for your garden and enjoy the beauty and serenity our neighborhood offers. Special guests include Barbara Durnan, University West resident master gardener. She will be present for questions and advice about your garden. As a special treat, landscape artist Judy Mathews will be present to showcase her talent and provide a glimpse into her painting style by painting the garden of the home in which she is featured. Judy's work is currently being featured at the Starbucks in Montgomery Plaza. Stop by to view a sneak preview of her work.

Each garden will feature a light appetizer, wine and other beverages. Raffle tickets will be available at each home for an opportunity to win a fabulous garden prize.

Below is the schedule of gardens. This is a progressive party so we will begin at the first house listed below and as a group progress to the second house and so on. We will spend about 45 minutes at each house. The event begins at 4:00.

TCU 2007 Football Schedule

The Mountain West Conference has announced the dates of the TCU football team's eight league games as well as the kickoff times and television schedule for the Horned Frogs' home and conference contests in 2007.
After opening the season with games versus Big 12 opponents Baylor (Sept. 1) and Texas (Sept. 8), TCU's third year in the MWC will begin on Thursday, Sept. 13, with a 7 p.m. contest at Air Force on CSTV. It will be the first of three Thursday games for the Frogs. The other Thursday dates are Oct. 18 at home against Utah and Nov. 8 at BYU. Both those contests will be seen on VERSUS.
The Baylor game at Amon G. Carter Stadium will have a 5 p.m. kickoff and be televised on CSTV. The Frogs' other non-conference home date, Sept. 22 against SMU, is a 7:30 p.m. contest also on CSTV.
There will be just one open date in this year's schedule. TCU will be off the weekend of Oct. 27, giving it a 16-day break after facing Utah and then hosting New Mexico Nov. 3.
TCU's MWC home opener will be Sept. 29 versus Colorado State at 6 p.m. The home finale is Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. against UNLV.
TCU has an Oct. 6 date at Wyoming and will close the regular season Nov. 24 at San Diego State.
Television information and kickoff times for the Frogs' two road non-conference games, Sept. 8 at Texas and Oct. 13 at Stanford, will be announced later.
TCU is 14-2 in its two seasons in the MWC. The Frogs went 8-0 and captured the league championship in their inaugural campaign in 2005, before placing second last year with a 6-2 mark.

UWNA Gas and Oil Committee

The oil and gas committee met on Thursday (3/1/07) with Chesapeake and directors of Colonial Country Club. Chesapeake has purchased 8 acres off of Rogers Rd. on the other side of the Trinity River. They also have purchased an additional site further west along the railroad yard. They propose to drill 8 horizontal well sunder the river and under Colonial and into our neighborhood. Colonial and Chesapeake have drafted a lease and are ready to sign, if they have not signed already.The oil and gas committee met with TCU representatives on Wednesday (3/7/07) and several other neighborhood associations. TCU has signed a letter of intent with Four Sevens. TCU has no formal commitment to drill at this time but is moving forward to work through various issues. TCU representatives wanted the neighborhoods to know that they want to preserve the quality of life of the area. They have asked each Neighborhood Association to present list of concerns from their homeowners. UWNA oil and gas committee needs your input. If you have any questions or specific concerns that could be passed on to either company, please contact Mike Cook or write your concerns and place in "drop box"on David McGuill's front porch (corner of Boyd and Park Hill). Please submit any concerns by Sunday, March 18th. The offerings from both of these companies have drastically improved over the last couple of months. Both companies want to lease your minerals and pay you a bonus. The big question is which company will actually produce gas from under your property and get you the biggest royalty income for years to come. For most it will not be a lot but you need to make an informed decision. The oil and gas committee is working for you. We will eventually make a recommendation on what company to sign with. It will then be your decision to make a choice.The UWNA oil and gas committee is working hard for your interests.Don't sign yet, don't make a mistake.Don't be in any hurry- we want to do this right!

This year the Back Yard/Garden Tour will have a new look. 4 homes have signed up to host their yard and gardens. The event will be from 4-8pm on April 28th. This will be a progressive tour starting with the first home. Food and beverage will be served at each house which will have a 4 course progressive type appetizers and dessert at the last house. Anyone interested in participating in the Backyard Garden party in any capacity is welcome. We have 4 yards and need volunteers to help with the food and logistics. FORT WORTH -- One of the most venerated stops on the PGA TOUR has a new title sponsor.
Colonial Country Club, Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts and the PGA TOUR Tuesday announced a new six-year title sponsorship agreement beginning in 2007. The multi-million dollar deal makes Crowne Plaza the first hotel brand to title sponsor a PGA TOUR golf tournament. Full financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"The Colonial has long been one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR, and we are looking forward to using this sponsorship as a national and international platform to showcase the Crowne Plaza brand," said Kevin Kowalski, vice president, brand management, Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts.

There are several hot items on the agenda that warrant your attention and input!

• Discussion of Recent Oil and Gas Lease Proposals—please hold off on signing anything until the meeting as we will have a Representative from one of the companies here to answer all of your questions. If we organize and educate ourselves it will only be to our advantage!
• Future of Historical Overlay—several of you have expressed an interest in organizing an effort to obtain a historical overlay that would protect and preserve our neighborhood’s historical charm. We will provide an update on this at the meeting and would love your input.
• UWNA Participation— in order to make our Association the best it can be we need more people to get involved. We have so many talented people living in our area, if we organize ourselves and all chip in just a little we can do amazing things! 'Twas the fortnight before Christmas

In University West

'Twas the fortnight before Christmas in University West, many little creatures were stirring, to be on their best.

Neighbors shared hot chocolate and cookies with each other, all congratulating Mellisa on being a new mother.

Tales of Christmas past were told and children danced with great joy, as they waited to tell Santa about sugar plumbs and that one special toy.

As the excitement of Santa's arrival grew and grew, lo and behold a vintage horn blew.

Santa and his helpers arrived on a mighty Mustang Stallion,
This reindeer less carriage was chauffeured by Brian Allen.

He was eagerly greeted by all young and old.

Santa shouted greetings and so it be told.

Hello Nate and Kate, Merry Christmas to Carter and Parker, I know you have been good to Jack and Zack, on to the triangle he said to little Ann,
The children started following this jolly old man.

As Santa greeted each good child by name.
The elves gave each a candy cane.

He sprang to the Mustang, to his elves gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all, and all a good night!"

Boyd Boo Bash 2006

Boyd Boo Bash reminds me of the story of Stone Soup.

Once upon a time, somewhere in post-war Eastern Europe, there was a great famine in which people jealously hoarded whatever food they could find, hiding it even from their friends and neighbors. One day a wandering soldier came into a village and began asking questions as if he planned to stay for the night.

"There's not a bite to eat in the whole province," he was told. "Better keep moving on."
"Oh, I have everything I need," he said. "In fact, I was thinking of making some stone soup to share with all of you." He pulled an iron cauldron from his wagon, filled it with water, and built a fire under it. Then, with great ceremony, he drew an ordinary-looking stone from a velvet bag and dropped it into the water.

By now, hearing the rumor of food, most of the villagers had come to the square or watched from their windows. As the soldier sniffed the "broth" and licked his lips in anticipation, hunger began to overcome their skepticism.

"Ahh," the soldier said to himself rather loudly, "I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, stone soup with cabbage -- that's hard to beat."

Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a cabbage he'd retrieved from its hiding place, and added it to the pot. "Capital!" cried the soldier. "You know, I once had stone soup with cabbage and a bit of salt beef as well, and it was fit for a king."

The village butcher managed to find some salt beef . . . and so it went, through potatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms, and so on, until there was indeed a delicious meal for all. The villagers offered the soldier a great deal of money for the magic stone, but he refused to sell and traveled on the next day. The moral is that by working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved.

Because of the generosity from area residents Boo Bash was a huge success. This year we were able to add new activities. These included Sugar Lump- the Clown (face painting), a larger bouncy house with a slide, cup cake decorating and a miniature hayride with the Spradster Roadster pulling the trailer. I continue to be amazed and thankful for living in a place like UW. Everyone is so kind, giving and best of all fun to be around. Boo Bash simply could not have been possible without the generous private donations and volunteers. I would like thank everyone who helped make this event fun. Literally everything from the Margarita machine to the popcorn machine were donated by our neighbors and/or area businesses.

At one point, I looked around and saw children laughing, playing, running, eating and enjoying an old fashioned block party. My heart swelled with pride knowing our children were creating memories that will last a life time.

Boyd Boo Bash 2005

Thanks to friends and neighbors, Boo Bash II was a ghostly blast! The food was even more delicious and can I say how awesome the margarita machine was:) One of the greatest assets of the Boo Bash is watching generations come together, having fun and enjoying each other's companionship. Neighbors that have lived in UWNA for over 70 years were congregating with our newest residents- newborn babies. What an amazing party.

Thanks to all the wonderfull friends (16 UWNA Families) that help make this a safe and fun festival.

Boyd Boo Bash 2004

October 31, 2004 was the 1st annual UWNA Boyd Boo Bash. The event started out ghoulish as the gobblins played in the bouncey house. Though the weather began a little scary, the event went on without a hitch.

Over 150 residents and friends came out to enjoy fun games, yummy food, and great fellowship the event provided.
